Secretary of State John Foster Dulles today said at his press conference that Israel’s assurances that the work on the Jordan River hydroelectric project would be halted while the United Nations Security Council discusses the issue, was considered by him sufficient to justify the resumption of American financial aid to Israel.
When his attention was drawn to the fact that Israel’s offer at the Security Council was nothing new because the Jewish State had previously agreed to a temporary halt, prior to the cutting off of American funds, Mr. Dulles replied that it was his understanding that Israel had not been ready to do what was necessary until the Israel representative expressed willingness at the Security Council to half the project.
The Secretary said he did not think the United States was entitled to be more demanding than the Security Council itself, noting that the Security Council was satisfied by Israel’s action on the hydroelectric issue. The American economic measures, said Mr. Dulles, were aimed originally at maintaining the authority of the United Nations.
Israel Minister Reuven Shiloah today exchanged views on issues before the Security Council with Robert Murphy, Deputy Under Secretary of State.
