Secretary of State John Foster Dulles, returning from his holiday, today told reporters at National Airport that he discussed the Arab-Israel situation and other aspects of the Middle East situation yesterday in New York with United Nations Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold.
The two-hour session took place shortly after the UN chief’s return from a visit to the Gaza Strip and talks with Egyptian President Nasser. A U.S. spokesman would only say that the meeting which took place in the Waldorf Astoria apartment of Ambassador Lodge covered subjects that had been dealt with at the recent General Assembly. But the presence of James W. Barco, counselor of the delegation and a specialist in Arab-Israeli affairs, suggested that more than a general exchange of views took place. Ambassador Lodge was the only other person present.
A State Department spokesman said today the United States expects no change in its decision to stay out of the Baghdad Pact. Press officer Joseph Reap said he did not expect the forthcoming trip of Secretary Dulles to the Baghdad Pact Council meeting at Ankara, Turkey, would change this basic attitude.
