“I would like to associate myself with the optimists who see (the interim, agreement) as the beginning of the road to peace.” Leon Dulzin, acting chairman of the Jewish Agency and World Zionist Organization, made this statement in an interview with the Jerusalem Post published here today. Dulzin, a leader of the Liberal wing of Likud, said the Liberals had been in principle in favor of an interim accord. “But I opposed the present accord because I think it offered no return by Egypt and was basically a military disengagement.”
(In a recent interview with the JTA, Dulzin criticized the negotiating team for not holding out for more meaningful political concessions from Egypt.)
“But since this is a democratic country and the agreement was accepted by the Knesset, this is the law and we have to respect it. I don’t see it as a cause for celebration or as a tragedy and I’d like to associate myself with the optimists who see it as the beginning of the road to peace. Israel will respect the agreement fully and I wish and hope that Egypt will do the same.”
