Praise for Hitler from two unexpected sources will probably evoke widespread criticism here in the next few days.
George J. Meyer, head of a local bottling company bearing his name, returned from a trip to England and Germany, declaring “the United States should have a Hitler.” At the same time the Rev. E. G. Homrigshausen, Indianapolis minister, sought to picture Hitler as a “champion of national traditions and ideals” before the Milwaukee Ministerial association.
Meyer came into the limelight several months ago when he was prosecuted by the Federal government for hoarding $90,000 in gold. He gave up the gold later. Meyer claimed that ninety-eight percent of the German people are “behind Hitler” and that Hitler’s objectionable activities “are greatly exaggerated in this country.”
The Rev. Homrigshausen contended that “all classes rallied around Hitler in a desperate attempt to escape Communism.”
“Even his dealings with the church are understandable,” he declared, “he has challenged the church in Germany to be loyal to his movement.”
