The question of whether a cantor has the right to appear on the stage as a concert singer is being discussed in the Jewish community of Arnheim.

The Chief Rabbi of Arnheim prohibited Cantor Tashlitzy from giving a concert, being of the opinion that it is not in conformity with the dignity of the position which he holds in the synagogue.

The cantor resigned, declaring that in his opinion a cantor is not lowering the dignity of his position by singing in a concert and cited the custom in America, where cantors are permitted to appear on the concert stage. The question will be submitted to the Rabbinical court here.
