Frederik Weinreb, a Dutch Orthodox Jew who was found guilty last Oct. 26 of having collaborated with the Gestapo in the Netherlands during the war and with having betrayed fellow Jews to the Nazis, was set free over the week-end. He originally received a six-year sentence.
The 37-year-old former Dutch Jewish communal leader was found guilty by a Special Court of Appeals at The Hague despite numerous protests by individuals and Jewish organizations against his conviction. Weinreb’s defenders maintained throughout that he was originally arrested, soon after the end of the war, on the false testimony of a Dutch Gestapo agent.
