A Dutch woman who helped save many Jews during World War II was awarded the Medal of the Just (Medaliat Chasidey Umot Haolam) in Bern by the Israeli Ambassador to Switzerland, Mattiyahu Adler.
Mrs. Charlotte De Habish who lives in Fribourg, Switzerland, was a young student in Holland when she helped Jews to escape. Wearing a yellow Magen David, the only way she could penetrate into the Jewish ghetto, she took out young Jewish children and helped them cross the border into Belgium where they were hidden on farms. Mrs. De Habish also helped American paratroopers hide.
She was finally arrested by the Gestapo and imprisoned. Her father who was also active in the anti-Nazi resistance was captured by the Germans and hanged.
