East Germany continued to supply Iraq with arms up to the eve of its invasion of Kuwait last summer, according to the Berlin weekly Junge Welt.
The last shipment arrived at the end of July 1990, when the Christian Democrats governed East Germany, the magazine pointed out. It included 17 heavy bridge girder tanks.
Iraqi troops entered Kuwait on Aug. 2.
The non-Communist regime apparently was continuing the relationship established by its Communist predecessor.
During the four preceding years, East Germany sent huge quantities of arms and ammunition to Iraq. East Germans trained Iraqis in the use of chemical weapons both in East Germany and in Iraq, where a special installation was built near Baghdad, the magazine said.
East and West Germany were united in October 1990.
