The great powers could not force Arab-Israel peace, but could provide guarantees that would promote stability, Israel Ambassador Abba Eban told a gathering of Christian clergymen here today. He spoke at the annual Institute on Judaism for the Christian Clergy arranged by the Washington Hebrew Congregation.
Mr. Eban predicted that the next decade will bring a scientific revolution ushering in the space age of deep significance for Israel. He saw a great challenge and opportunity for Israel in the next ten years.
Describing the international situation, he said the Soviet Union now possesses centers and footholds in Cairo and Damascus. He said the military dictatorships of Egypt and Syria had “unhappily” become a “pattern” in the emergence of Arab nationalist authoritarianism.
