Problems of mutual interest were discussed today by Israel Ambassador Abba Eban and William Rountree, Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs. Mr. Eban later told newsmen the discussion covered “certain economic programs now in operation.” He said “practical economic and commercial cooperation” was discussed.
Mr. Eban said the fact that Syria was not mentioned at all in his talk today with Mr. Rountree indicated tension in the area had subsided. He pointed out, however, that the basic question of security–meaning the independence and integrity of states in this area–remains.
