The possibilities of reducing Israel-Egyptian tension in the Gaza area was discussed here today between Israel Ambassador Abba Eban and John D. Jernegan, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs. Mr. Eban was accompanied on his visit to the State Department by Counsellor Yaacov Shimoni.
President Eisenhower received today Rev. Edward L.R. Elsono a member of the board of directors of the American Friends of the Middle East–an anti-Zionist propaganda organization. Rev. Elsono is pastor of the National Presbyterian Church, which the President attends.
It was learned from government sources that Dr. Elson intended to touch on points involving American policy toward Israel. The exact nature of the discussion with reference to the phase pertaining to the Middle East could not be determined.
George V. Allen, Assistant Secretary of State, opening a new Voice of America broadcast last night, appealed to the peoples of the Middle East today for closer mutual understanding. The new program is an English language broadcast giving 15 minutes of news and 15 minutes of commentaries and special events. The broadcast originates in Washington and is a rebroadcast by relay stations in the Middle East.
