Abba Eban has gone abroad on a personal mission for Foreign Minister Shimon Peres in Eastern Europe.
The Laborite chairman of the Knesset’s Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee left Sunday for Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia.
A former foreign minister of Israel, Eban will be the guest of the foreign ministers of those countries.
While in Prague, he is expected to discuss practical steps toward the resumption of diplomatic relations between Israel and Czechoslovakia, which the Czechs broke in 1967.
Eban is due back in Israel for the Nov. 1 Knesset elections and then will return to Europe for further meetings with officials in Bulgaria, Hungary and Poland.
Eban is not standing for re-election to the Knesset. But his involvement in this sensitive mission is one indication that his vast diplomatic experience is still seen as a valuable commodity.
