Encouraging the Arab refugees in the Middle East to “choose” between repatriation and compensation, as proposed by Henry R. Labouisse, director of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees, could lead only to “frustration and tragedy,” in the opinion of Abba S. Eban, chairman of the Israel delegation here.
Mr. Eban spoke on the Arab refugee problem over the week-end in an hour-and-a-half address before the General Assembly’s special political committee. The committee has been discussing the Arab refugee problem for a week, and the air here has been blue with violent attacks against Israel by many of the Arab delegates. The future of the refugees, Mr. Eban declared, lies in the Arab lands.
