Foreign Minister Abba Eban presented his report on the recent United Nations Security Council deliberations and its Middle East resolution at a closed-door session of a special ministerial committee on national security attended by Prime Minister Eshkol and the entire Cabinet. The session, which started this afternoon, was broken off so that the Cabinet could attend funeral services for Brig. Haim Ben David, Israel Ambassador to Ethiopia, who was killed in an air crash. It resumed this evening.
Under Israeli law, publication of anything beyond official announcements on security matters is a criminal offense and special precautions were taken to prevent news leaks. An official statement may be published later.
(At the United Nations, Ambassador Gideon Rafael, Israel’s permanent representative at the United Nations, met for 45 minutes today with Ambassador Gunnar Jarring, Secretary General U Thant’s special representative to the Middle East. Ambassador Rafael was the first of the parties concerned in the Middle East dispute to meet with Ambassador Jarring. No details of their talk were given.
(A U.N. spokesman said today that the U.N. will not disclose Ambassador Jarring’s schedule of appointments while he is in New York prior to leaving for the Middle East. The reason for the blackout was believed to be the refusal of Syria, which rejected the Security Council’s Middle East resolution, to meet with the Secretary General’s representative.)
