The Western powers were urged last night by Israel’s Ambassador Abba Eban to strengthen Israel militarily and economically in order to enable the Jewish State to resist anti-democratic forces seeking a foot hold in the Middle East. Mr. Eban spoke at the concluding session of the convention of the National Committee for Labor Israel at the Hotel Commodore.
The Israeli diplomat analyzed the aggressive attitude of the Arab countries not only with regard to Israel, but also with regard to international treaties and obligations and contrasted it with Israel’s progressive stand. “Under these circumstances,” he continued, “does it not follow as an obvious conclusion that those powers in the world which wish to increase the defensive capacity of our area, which wish to make our area resistant to anti-democratic forces from outside or from with should base their policy on strengthening, those, elements in the area, such as the State of Israel, whose nationalism is free from these imperfections?”
