Earl Warren, Chief Justice of the United States, and Dr. John Slawson, executive vice-president of the American Jewish Committee, received honorary degrees here yesterday at the annual commencement exercises of the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion.
They were among five distinguished Americans who were awarded the degree of doctor of humane letters, three recipients of the honorary degree of doctor of divinity; four who were given degrees of doctor of Hebrew letters; four awarded diplomas as doctor of philosophy; and 19 graduates of HUC-JIR who were ordained as rabbis.
The degrees were conferred by Dr. Nelson Glueck, president of HUC-JIR, who conducted the ordination services here at Temple Bene Israel. Others who received honorary degrees included Dr. Frederick C. Grant, professor emeritus of Biblical theology at Union Theological Seminary, New York; Henry M. Butzel, of Detroit; Murray Season-good, of Cincinnati; Rabbi Joseph L. Ginsberg, of Peoria, III.; Rabbi David Lefkowitz; Jr., of Shreveport, La.; and Rabbi Joseph Schwarz, of Benton Harbor, Michigan.
