The economic foundations of the Jewish community in Palestine are unshaken, declared Sigfried Hoofien, president of the Chamber of Commerce of the Jaffa district, at a meeting of the Chamber. Individuals have suffered and some have been ruined, he declared, “but even a conquering army sustains casualties. Trade and industry require tranquility but the Jews have shown in the last four months an ability to carry on under war-like conditions.”
Representatives of the Arab Chamber of Commerce were invited to the meeting but begged off because their own meeting was held at the same time.
