Foreign Secretary Anthony Eden told the House of Commons last night that he regrets not being able to report any progress in the efforts which are being made to rescue Jews from Hungary. He made this statement in reply to a question by a member as to whether Admiral Horthy’s promise to permit Jews to leave Hungary if they secure visas for Palestine and neutral countries is now being carried out.
The German radio today reported that all the property of the Jews in Hungary will be taken over by the Hungarian state. “Jews will only be allowed to keep such articles, as furniture and other chattels, that are directly needed for everyday use and stocks of food and fuel enough to last a fortnight,” the broadcast said.
The Budapest radio announced that Premier Ferenc Szalasi has ordered the Minister of the Interior to examine by November 15, the certificates of exemption from the anti-Jewish regulations granted certain categories of Jews, in order that they may either be confirmed or cancelled. Under the new decree only those Jews will be exempted who hold a gold or two silver medals for bravery on the battlefield, or an Iron Crown, or were at least seventy-five percent disabled, or are widows and orphans of persons killed in this war.
