A medal in commemoration of the octocentennial of Moses Maimonides, famous Jewish philosopher and sage whose 800th anniversary is now being celebrated in many countries, has been struck by the Jewish Education Association, it was announced yesterday by Judge Otto A. Rosalsky, acting president of the organization. The medal will be distributed as prizes to pupils in the Jewish religious schools having the best records for the school year in attendance and progress. Three prizes will be awarded in gold-filled, sterling and bronze.
The prizes have been made possible by special contributions made by David Shapiro, publisher of the Day, in memory of his wife, and by other friends of the organization.
Several hundred schools, with a register of approximately 40,000 pupils, it is estimated by Bernard Semel, honorary secretary of the Association, will be eligible for the prizes and about 1,000 medals will be awarded. Rules to govern the distribution of the medals have been issued to principals in the Jewish religious schools by Israel S. Chipkin, educational director of the organization.
