EDWARD A. FILENE, 77-YEAR-OLD BOSTON DEPARTMENT-STORE MAGNATE AND PHILANTHROPIST, DIED AT THE AMERICAN HOSPITAL HERE TODAY, THE HAVAS NEWS AGENCY REPORTED.
THE MASSACHUSETTS MILLIONAIRE DEVELOPED HIS SECOND ATTACK OF PNEUMONIA IN TWO YEARS AT BOULOGNE-SUR-MER LAST SUNDAY. HE WAS IMMEDIATELY TAKEN TO THE AMERICAN HOSPITAL AT NEUILLY, WHERE HE BATTLED FOR HIS LIFE UNTIL AFTER MIDNIGHT THIS MORNING, SINKING STEADILY AND FINALLY SUCCUMBING AT 3:40 A.M.
FILENE HAD BEEN TRAVELING IN EUROPE SINCE JULY STUDYING THE ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL QUESTIONS WHICH HAD INTERESTED HIM THROUGHOUT HIS LONG CAREER AS A BUSINESS MAN.
SON OF AN IMMIGRANT SHOPKEEPER, HE ROSE TO THE POSITION OF PRESIDENT OF WILLIAM FILENE’S SONS CO. HE ADVOCATED DURING HIS LIFETIME THE FIVE-DAY WEEK, SOCIAL SECURITY, AND HIGHER TAXES ON LARGE INCOMES.
