Edward Bernstein, noted 80-year-old German-Jewish Socialist theorist, has published an article in the Berlin “Forwaerts” in reply to the recent article by Karl Kautsky, another famous Socialist theorist, in which he opposed Zionism as such as an aid to imperialism.
Bernstein declares that the Jews are building up a national home on the basis of self-labor in accordance with the League of Nations Mandate. Denying the historic rights of the Jewish people in Palestine, and condemning Jewish nationalism for expelling the Arabs, he declares that the great majority of the Jewish immigrants to Palestine, being members of the working class, do not want the Arabs expelled but desire mutual and peaceful work.
Expressing surprise that Kautsky, who is a scientific interpreter of Marx and Engels, should avail himself of the anti-Semitic arguments of the National Socialists against Zionism, Bernstein refers to the pro-Zionistic views of other Socialist leaders, such as Vandervelde and Huysman.
