A demand for action rather than promises is the reaction of Rumanian liberal newspapers to the statement made this week by Foreign Minister Micolesou-Buzeste to the correspondent of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency in which he declared that his government will “soon” announce decrees eradicating all traces of anti-Jewish legislation and restoring all property confiscated from Jews.
All newspapers in Bucharest carry the minister’s statement, but some of them comment that there is quite a gap between promises and deeds. “The minister’s words with regard to the Jews are so far only promises; actually nothing has been done,” writes the newspaper Victoria. Other papers comment in similar vein.
Dr. William Filderman, president of the Association of Jews in Rumania, today emphasized that while a decree issued by the Rumanian Government restores to the Jews in the country their civil rights under the 1923 constitution, it is nevertheless a fact that confiscated property has not been returned as yet to Jews. The Jewish population, he said, is in desperate need of urgent help since thousands are underfed, have practically no clothes, and are exposed to the full rigors of the severe Rumanian winter.
