Efforts by United Nations officials and United States diplomatic representatives to obtain agreement of the Lebanese Government to the admission of Gerold Frank, Jewish Telegraphic Agency correspondent accredited to the United Nations Palestine Committee, continued fruitlessly today.
Lowell C. Pinkerton, United States Minister in Beirut, informed William Porter, American Consul here, by telephone this morning that the Foreign Office still held to the ban on Frank. The official reason given Mr. Pinkerton for the ban, he said, was that when Frank was in the Lebanon last year as a correspondent accompanying the Anglo-American inquiry committee on Palestine, he had failed to report to the Surete Nationale, the Lebanese police.
Frank pointed out here today that this was incorrect since he had been placed under close police surveillance by the Lebanese authorities on his arrival in that country and had been escorted to the offices of the Surete Nationale by a police guard for questioning.
