Egypt announced officially today that it is resuming control of the Gaza Strip, and made known the appointment of an Egyptian general as new military governor for the area.

State Department spokesman Lincoln White declined comment on Egypt’s announcement. He said the question of resumed Egyptian military control of the Gaza Strip was a matter for the United Nations as the appropriate agency to express itself on the issue. The official announcement made by the Egyptian authorities in Cairo said that “the Egyptian administration will assume functions in the Gaza Strip forthwith.”

At the same time, Egyptian President Nasser was reported here today as indicating that he has no intention to allow Israeli shipping through either the Suez or Akaba water ways. He was also reported as stating that he is not sure whether he will abide by any World Court ruling on Israel’s right to send ships through the Suez Canal and the Gulf of Akaba.

Meanwhile, Egypt protested today to United Nations Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold against the “United Nations Emergency Force exceeding its duties which were defined by the United Nations, and opening fire on civilians in the Gaza sector. “
