Egypt has asked the United States for free heavy arms so that she can “defend herself and guarantee security for the Near East” and also furnish the United Nations forces with troops under the new world security plan, Egyptian Foreign Minister Mohammed Salah el-Din told a press conference at the Egyptian embassy today.
Salah el-Din said that he has asked Secretary of Defense George Marshall and Secretary of State Dean Acheson to include Egypt among nations receiving U.S. arms without cost. He said that Egypt should be supplied along with Iran, Turkey, Greece and other democracies. Explaining that American arms would enable Egypt to participate in a U.N. police force, Salah el-Din said that the U.S. should give Egypt arms proportionate to her strategic importance, size and population.
