Egypt has informed the British Government that the master of the British freighter Anshun which was shelled in the Strait of Akaba July 2 had failed to heed Egyptian signals to identify himself and state his destination. This was contained in a reply to the British protest against the shelling the Anshun by Egyptian shore batteries.
The Egyptian note, sent to the British Embassy in Cairo yesterday, is understood to amount to a rejection of the British protest. The Egyptian reply is expected to figure largely in a debate in Commons tomorrow when MP’s on both sides of the House are expected to denounce what they call the Egyptian “outrage.”
