Egypt has already received 15 Soviet MIG jet planes under the Czech-Egyptian arms deal, the London Daily Express reported today. It said that planes, together with tanks, were delivered secretly yesterday. Armaments from Czechoslovakia have thus far been delivered to Egypt in one Egyptian, one Soviet and three Rumanian vessels, the paper reported from Cairo. With the armaments, it said, came six Russians and eight Czechs who will show the Egyptians how to use and maintain the equipment.
(What is believed to have been the most important shipment of Czechoslovak arms for Egypt arrived at the port of Alexandria on Saturday in the Soviet freighter “Krasnodar” (“Red Gift”), according to reports received at the State Department in Washington. Department officials maintained today that they had “no firm information” on the nature of the cargoes unloaded within the past week from six freighters at Alexandria but reported unusual security measures and unloading operations carried out in secrecy under cover of darkness.)
