The Cairo radio today said an “armed clash” took place between Egyptian and Israeli forces Sunday at Sabha, an Egyptian outpost in the Sinai desert. The spokesman did not report casualties.

Brig Gen. Moshe Dayan, Chief of Staff of the Israeli Army, declared today that there is only one way to defend the lives of Israelis who drill for oil or water along the frontiers, “and that is by setting a high price for their lives.” He made his statement in addressing the new graduating class of cadet officers who were inducted into the Army today.

“The Army’s mission must be carried out,” said Gen; Dayan, “and we must remember that, if the borders were to be deserted there would be no more borders. Our Army must be alert, prepared, and must master new weapons. Israel is strong, it would fight to the last man, for its soldiers are unlimited in their devotion to the State.”
