Taking their cue from Cairo’s Government-controlled daily newspaper, “Al Abram, the Egyptian press today mounted an all-out campaign against Pope Paul’s plan to visit Israel, declaring that the Pontiff’s visit would be interpreted by the press as “recognition of Israel.”
“Al Ahram” also asked whether there is a relation between the Pope’s scheduled visit to the Holy Land and the chapter on Catholic-Jewish relations pending in the Ecumenical Council, which adjourned last week without acting on that chapter.
