Cairo radio said today that Egypt will seek international approval for its “right to liberate our lands” at the General Assembly’s Middle East debate. The Cairo commentator also said that Egypt will seek General Assembly endorsement of its interpretation of Security Council Resolution 242. He accused Israel of trying to persuade world opinion that Egypt wants to resume shooting. In truth, he said, Egypt wants the world body to legitimize its right to liberate Arab lands.
The Cairo commentator said that Israel still refuses to reply to the Feb. 8 memorandum from UN mediator Gunnar Jarring which asked whether Jerusalem was ready to commit itself to withdrawal from the occupied territories. Israel would like to see the Jarring mission continue to “revolve in empty space,” the commentator said, adding that Egypt “will not be fooled by this ruse.”
Foreign Ministry officials declined to comment on reports that several Latin American states would sponsor a General Assembly resolution to revive the Jarring peace mission without prior conditions. The reports were attributed to Israeli sources in London.
