Welcomed here by America’s highest officials, 10 members of the Egyptian People’s Assembly have left Washington for the southwest and the Pacific coast on their 17-day trans-continental tour paid for by the U.S. Treasury.
Last week, President Ford received the nine men and one woman at the White House and Vice-President Nelson Rockefeller held a reception for them. The Egyptians were welcomed at the State Department by Secretary of State Henry A. Kissinger, and Undersecretary of State Joseph J. Sisco hosted a lunch. They also met with key members of the Senate and House. Presidential press secretary Ron Nessen said that the President’s reception symbolized the U.S. intention to work for peace in the Middle East and the warm and friendly relations existing between Egypt and the United States. The group’s leader is Dr. Gamel Otefi, Deputy Speaker of the Egyptian Assembly.
In their tour of the U.S. the group will visit Houston, Phoenix, Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York from where they will return to Cairo. The State Department arranged the visit under its cultural program that was established with Egypt after former President Nixon visited Cairo last June.
