Negotiations were proceeding today for release of the 3,000-ton Greek-flagged freighter Parnon which was apprehended and seized by Egyptian authorities and taken into Port Said when it entered the Suez Canal en route from Haifa to Eilat and East African ports.
The vessel carries a mixed cargo, including asphalt for Eilat and cars, refrigerators, tools and other products for East African destinations. The ship left Haifa port in mid-August, two months after its agents, Traders and Shippers Limited, had disclosed the ship’s route. The vessel was the first to seek passage through the canal with exports from Israel in many months.
Two Israeli fishermen, seized by the Egyptian authorities when the Yugoslav fishing vessel, the Lubin, was forced to put in to Gaza port last Tuesday, were still being detained today although the vessel and its Yugoslav crew were freed yesterday following an Israeli protest to the Israel-Egypt Mixed Armistice Commission. According to the Yugoslav sailors, they were maltreated by the Egyptians when they were arrested.
