Joseph Tekoah, Israel’s deputy permanent representative here, held a “lengthy conference”, today with Dr. Ralph J. Bunche. Undersecretary, who is leaving for the Middle East tomorrow to visit Cairo and Jerusalem among other places.
The subject of their discussion, it was established definitely, was Israel’s recent complaint to the Security Council against United Arab Republic interference with Suez Canal shipping carrying cargoes that had originated in Israel. Today’s conference was one of a series of such talks held between Mr. Tekoah and Dr. Bunche during the last few days.
While there was no word from either of the conferees about the issue, it is known that the UAR has not yet replied to Israel’s Security Council complaint nor, in fact, has the UAR sent any communication to the United Nations on the subject. All inquiries to the UAR representatives here, even from the top level of the Secretariat, have been referred to Cairo–while top UAR officials in Cairo, including Foreign Minister Mohamned Fawzi, have simply refused to discuss the matter.
