An Israel Foreign Ministry spokesman today pointed to the Egyptian shelling of the British freighter Anshun at the mouth of the Gulf of Akaba last Sunday as “additional proof” of Egypt’s disregard for international law and the fundamental bases of the armistice agreement. Israel, the spokesman announced, will bring this “grave incident” to the attention of the maritime powers.

“The bombardment of the Anshun exposes Egypt’s illegal insistence on the exercise of belligerent rights contrary to international obligations, which finds expression in such acts as the shelling of defenseless ships and the denial of passage of Israel ships through the Suez Canal,” he concluded.
