The new Israeli prime minister hopes to push through a plan for withdrawing from swathes of the West Bank and setting Israel’s borders, unilaterally if necessary in the absence of peace talks with the Palestinians. “The disengagement from the Gaza Strip and Northern Samaria was an essential first step in this direction,” he said, referring to an initial withdrawal last year, “but the main part is still ahead.”
