The first comprehensive and up-to-date survey of the Jewish communities of the city and state of New York, covering more than thirty pages of text and illustrations, is among the more than 1,200 authoritative articles contained in volume VIII of the Universal Jewish Encyclopedia, published here today. Other arlicles concerning Palestine, Jewish Nationalism, Popes, Pogroms, Nazism, Freedom of Opinion, Numerus Clausus, and hundreds of kindred subjects are also included in the eighth volume, according to an announcement by Rabbi Isaac Landman, editer-in-chief of this ten-volume work in English of which Louis Rittenberg is executive and literary editor.
The remaining two volumes will appear at short intervals. Volume VIII of the Universal Jewish Encyclopedia is dedicated to the “inspring memory of Julius Rosenwald (1862-1932), practical humanitarian whose modesty matched his merits, whose wise and widespread generosity created new horizons of social and educational progress,” More than 150 experts have contributed first hand documented surveys of 128 communities throghout the world and special articles on a wide variety of questions affecting Jewish life everywhere.
