Eight alleged members of the Irgun who were tried in absentia here last week on the charge of bombing the British Embassy here in November 1946, were this week-end found guilty and sentenced to various terms of imprisonment. However, their sentences were automatically annulled by amnesties decreed in Italy since the bombing took place.
Of the eight, five were arrested in Rome after the bombing and later released on bail. They jumped bail and fled to Israel. The other three were never arrested. The court sentenced the “ringleader,” Moishe Deitel, to 16 months imprisonment and the others to a maximum of eight months. It is believed that all eight now reside in Israel.
