Eight students were ordained as Reform rabbis, and three graduates were invested as cantors, at commencement exercises held here today at Temple Emanu-El by the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion. The degrees were conferred by Dr. Nelson Glueck, president of the College-Institute, and the baccalaureate address was delivered by Dr. Julius Mark, senior rabbi of Temple Emanu-El.
At the same time, honorary degrees were awarded to Judge Caroline K. Simon, of the New York State Court of Claims; Henry Hofheimer, attorney and chairman of the College-Institute’s New York administrative committee; Aaron Glanz-Leyeless, Yiddish poet and essayist; Milton R. Konvitz, professor of industrial relations and professor of law at Cornell University; and Leon L. Watters, noted American chemist.
Also to Rabbi Meyer Machlis, Temple of the Covenant, New York; Rabbi Kurt L. Metzger, Temples Beth-El, Bradford, Pa., and B’nai Israel, Olean, N.Y.; and Rabbi Abraham Ruderman, Vassar Temple, Poughkeepsie, N. Y.; and Rabbi Malcolm H. Stern, director of the Rabbinical Placement Commission in New York.
