A federal grant of $3, 750, 000 to the Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University, for the building of a center for research in mental retardation, was announced yesterday by Secretary of Welfare Anthony Celebrezze.
The Center will be linked to the Jacobi Hospital in the Bronx Municipal Hospital Center which is affiliated with Einstein College. The grant was made by the National Institutes of Health of the U. S. Public Health Service. The structure is to be completed in 1968 and will be the first of its kind in this part of the United States. Land has been provided by the City of New York.
The Center will have a staff of more than 200 scientists, directed by Dr. Harry H. Gordon, Professor of Pediatrics of the National Association for Retarded Children and Professor of Pediatrics and Research Professor of Obstetrics at Einstein College. Yeshiva University specialists will be involved in special aspects of the Center program.
The federal grant will cover most of the construction costs of the center. Supplementary funds will be obtained from voluntary sources.
