The United States Government today hinted that it may invoke the Eisenhower Doctrine by extending emergency military and economic aid to cope with the Communist threat arising from Syria.
The State Department made known, meanwhile, that Undersecretary of State Loy Henderson found “deep concern lest Syria should become a victim of international Communism,” Secretary of State Dulles will personally report on the Henderson findings and other urgent developments to President Eisenhower, the State Department said.
The State Department indicated that the Henderson report on Syria will be given further study in the light of relevant principles of the United Nations Charter and the Congressional Joint Resolution of March 9, 1957, enunciating the Eisenhower Doctrine. This seemed to imply that the government is on the brink of a move to bolster the defenses of Jordan, Lebanon. Iraq and Turkey.
Meanwhile, it was revealed here today that the United States has made emergency preparations to airlift a quantity of U.S. weapons and munitions to Jordan. The arms will be shipped from U.S. stockpiles in West Germany. Among the weapons to be flown to the Jordan Arab Legion are 105 mm. recoilless cannon, weapons carriers, and other arms with high mobility and firepower. The air shipments will begin arriving in Jordan next week, it was said.
