President Eisenhower, in a message today to the triennial convention of the B’nai B’rith here, said he was “glad to know” that Secretary of State John Foster Dulles will address the convention. (The Secretary of state was scheduled to speak at a dinner tonight climaxing the convention. By the time the Bulletin went to press his speech had not been released for publication.)
In his message, President Eisenhower said that the B’nai B’rith had “done much to combat ignorance and intolerance, to serve the cause of education, and to provide assistance to those in need.” He expressed confidence that the members of the B’nai B’rith “will continue steadfast in their devotion to justice and freedom and equality of opportunity, and that they will carry forward, through their endeavors in communities throughout the country, their organization’s long honored history of service.”
The convention expressed its ‘earnest approbation of the Administration’s policy of giving full cooperation to the United Nations” in a resolution. The B’nai B’rith warned against “permitting sectarian religious indoctrination in public schools” and said that religious teaching in public classrooms tended “to minimize the importance of the principle of separation of church and state.” The B’nai B’rith asked political leaders “to repudiate publicly the efforts of hatemongers to inject bigotry” into the forthcoming national elections.
