President Eisenhower greeted the Jews of the United States today on the occasion of the Jewish New Year 5718.In a message issued through the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, the President offered American Jewry his “best wishes.” The message reads:
“At the beginning of the Jewish New Year, it is fitting for all to give thanks for the past twelve months and to look to the future with confidence born of the mercy of God.
“The blessings of life and the freedoms all of us enjoy in this land today are based in no small measure on the Ten Commandments which have been handed down to is by the religious teachers of the Jewish faith. These Commandments of God provide endless opportunities for fruitful service, and they are a stronghold of moral purpose for men everywhere.
“In this season as our fellow citizens of the Jewish faith bow their heads in prayer and lift their eyes in hope we offer them the best wishes of our hearts.”
Vice President Nixon, in a Rosh Hashanah message issued through the JTA, said: “It is a pleasure to extend my best wishes to all members of the Jewish faith on the occasion of Rosh Hashanah.Each new year causes us to renew our hopes for true understanding and brotherhood among all faiths and all peoples, Our prayers are for peace, good will, liberty and justice throughout the world.
“Man has been striving toward this goal since his beginning on this earth. Through difficult and happy times he has been sustained in this quest by a strong religious faith. On the eve of the New Year, let us all rededicate ourselves to the attainment of the ultimate happiness and security for all.”
