The authoritative Italian weekly, L’Espresso, reported yesterday from Washington that President Eisenhower was expected, during his meeting with Generalissimo Franco, to request “that religious freedom for Protestants and Jews in Spain be respected.”
Several high Catholic prelates were reported as favoring American intervention in favor of Spain’s religious minorities although officially they take the position of supporting Franco’s policies, the weekly said.
