Sen. Arthur V. Watkins, Utah Republican, who is sponsoring a bill to implement President Eisenhower’s recommendations liberalizing the Refugee relief Act of 1953, said today “we are facing real difficulties” in getting it through Congress. The President’s proposals were made May 27.
Sen. Watkins, sponsor of the Administration’s original Refugee Act which proved unworkable, pointed out that sentiment against liberal immigration was “pretty much the same” today as it was when the 1953 Act was before Congress. Promising to do his “level best,” the Senator said it was “just being realistic” to point out difficulties in the path of the new legislation.
