El Al Israel Airlines has decided to purchase two Boeing, 707 jet airliners for the company’s trans-Atlantic service, it was reported here today. El Al’s board of directors accepted the recommendation of the management to acquire two Boeing 707/420 jets powered by Rolls Royce Conway engines with an option on a third jet airliner. Delivery dates call for two of the jet aircraft to be in operation early in 1961.
Plans to purchase the new aircraft will be subject to approval by the Israel Government while the company’s financing proposals are subject to the approval of the Israel Ministries of Finance and Transport. (It was reported from Jerusalem today that Cabinet Ministers who must approve the purchase have indicated to the airline that the proposal will be approved. The cost of the two Boeings was estimated in Jerusalem to be $15, 000, 000.
An eventual EIAI schedule of a daily direct jet flight from New York to Israel is planned, the airline announced. The Jet-powered Britannia now in trans-Atlantic service will be continued by the company until the introduction of the pure Jets next year. The Britannias will then operate on European routes and for charter service.
