Air crews of El Al Israel National Airlines called off their six-day strike early this morning after night-long discussions and agreed to return to work without winning their demands for more pay. The airline immediately announced a return to normal schedules on all flights.
The strikers gave up their battle after the International Pilots Union formally disapproved of the strike and the airline assembled substitute crews and additional flights with chartered planes. “In announcing the end of the strike, the crew members said they were obeying appeals of the Histadrut, the Israel Labor Federation, which also had rejected their claims, and of the Government to return to work “so no harm would be done.”
The strikers did win an agreement for establishment of a committee representing them, the Histadrut and the airline to seek a solution to the strike issues within a month. The committee was to be set up later today.
