The newly elected Mayor of El Arish in northern Sinai has invited both Jews and Arabs to settle in his town and sought to promote it as a tourist attraction. Mayor Mobih Youssef el-Bek said yesterday there was no unemployment, no security problems and a beach “at least as nice as” Miami’s “and certainly less polluted.”
The Mayor told newsmen that his town has a budget of IL 700,000 this year and that last year’s IL 400,000 deficit has been reduced to IL 40,000. He also noted that the 250 refugee families resettled in El Arish from nearby camps have integrated woll into the town’s population.
Soviet Defense Minister Marshal Andre Gretchko arrived in Paris today for a six-day visit.
