El Fatah said today in a Cairo broadcast that United Nations truce observers at the Suez Canal stand in the way of Arab conquest of Palestine and Israel-held areas, “Anyone who blocks the way to liberation is our enemy and will be declared as such,” said the broadcast heard here.
The broadcast came in the wake of the arrival of a UN observer mission in Cairo to investigate the death Sunday of Maj. B. Roland Plane, a Swedish observer killed when an artillery shell struck his post.
Egyptian Foreign Minister Mahmoud Riad yesterday sent messages to Secretary-General U Thant and Sweden’s Foreign Minister expressing “deep sorrow” over the incident. Israel’s Defense Minister, Moshe Dayan sent a similar letter to the UN observer corps’ Chief of Staff, Lt. Gen. Odd Bull, also voicing regret.
Meanwhile, Israeli troops clashed with Jordanians near the Sea of Galilee today, an Army spokesman said. One Israeli was injured during the machine gun battle near Ashdod Yakov. Two civilians were killed when their car struck a mine which Israel said was planted by commandos in the Jordan Valley eight miles south of the Sea of Galilee.
