This capital of Brazil went all out to celebrate Israel’s 10th anniversary. A mass meeting in honor of Israel was presided over by Mayor Francisco Negrao de Lima and addressed by Osvaldo Aranha, Brazilian statesman who presided in 1948 over the United Nations General Assembly session at which the Palestine partition resolution was adopted. The meeting was also addressed by Israel Ambassador Arieh Aroch.
Avenida Rio Branca, the city’s main street, has been decorated since last Wednesday, by the mayor’s order, with Israeli flags. The Brazilian Senate and the Chamber of Deputies, as well as the City Council, held special sessions in honor of Israel. All letters were cancelled with a special Israeli 10th anniversary stamp, while some of the Brazilian newspapers put out special Israeli supplements.
In Sao Paulo, some 10,000 Brazilians attended a mass meeting in the Pacaembus Stadium in honor of Israel’s tenth anniversary at which Israel Minister Bar Yehuda, Col. Tamir of the Israel Army and Brazilian Congressman Horacia Lafer the principal speakers. The Brazilian United Jewish Appeal launched its initial pledge campaign with marked increases in giving over last year.
