Returns in municipal elections held throughout Austria yesterday revealed alarming signs of the growing influence of neo-Nazi forces in this country.
In the Salzburg district, the Freedom Party, a neo-Nazi organization, made tremendous gains and increased the number of seats it held from 110 to 181. Its gains were at the expense of Chancellor Raab’s Peoples Party and the Socialists. The coalition parties, however, retained their position as the strongest parties.
In Vienna, the Freedom Party won four seats out of the 100 contested. It had held no seats there previously. In the Tyrol, the Freedom Party lost two seats and now holds five out of 40.
